Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Today's expedition is a big one. Why do trees have rings inside?

The Big Idea

A ring is one year of new wood. In many climates, a tree grows in a yearly pulse, so you can count the pulses. The trunk keeps a weather diary inside! Trees that live in places with seasons show the clearest rings.

Spring Growth

Step one: spring growth. Fast spring growth makes a wide, lighter band of new wood. The tree is busy and has plenty of water.

Summer Slows

Step two: summer slows. Slower summer growth makes a darker, tighter band. Together, a light band and a dark band look like one ring. Wet years make wider rings, and dry years make thinner ones.

The Stump Shows It

Step three: the stump shows the history. Each year, a new ring wraps around the old ones. On a stump, you can count the rings from the center out to estimate the tree's age. It is like reading a book that the tree wrote all by itself.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at tree rings! The center is the oldest wood. The bark is the tough outside of the tree. A light band is fast spring growth. A dark band is slower summer growth. One light band and one dark band together make one year.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The center of the trunk is the oldest wood. Tropical trees that grow all year may not show clear rings. A scar in the rings can mark a fire or a broken branch. Safety first: look at fallen logs and stumps, and do not cut living trees to count rings.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, look at a photo of a stump or a fallen log. Count the rings. About how many years old was it? Which rings look skinny?

Outro

Now you know! Every ring is one year of a tree's story. Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
