What do chimpanzee faces tell us?
Chimpanzees have expressive faces. They pull their lips back into a wide grin when they feel scared or nervous, and they push their lips out when they are excited or want to get something. Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What do chimpanzee faces tell us?
The Big Idea
Chimpanzees have very expressive faces! They can show many feelings. What do their faces tell us?
Nervous Grins
Step one: Nervous Grins. Chimpanzees pull their lips back into a wide grin when they feel scared or nervous. So a chimp's grin isn't always a happy smile, even if it looks like one to us.
Lip Pouts
Step two: Lip Pouts. They push their lips out when they're excited or want to get something. Each face sends a different message, and other chimps understand right away.
Faces and More
Step three: Faces and More. Chimps use faces, sounds, and gestures to talk. Faces are important for communication in many primates, including people.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Scared. Excited. Calls. Signals.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A chimp's grin is not always a smile of happiness. Pouts can mean excitement. Gestures send messages. We use faces too.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Make faces in a mirror: surprised, happy, worried. Then show them to a friend. Have them guess each feeling. Switch roles. Which face was easiest to guess?
