How does a mother sheep find her own lamb?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a mother sheep find her own lamb?

The Big Idea

A big flock of sheep! They all look alike! How does a mother find her own lamb?

Smell and Sound

Step one: Smell and Sound. A mother sheep can pick out her lamb in a big flock using smell and sound. A lamb learns its mother's voice too.

Remembering Scent

Step two: Remembering Scent. Many mammal mothers sniff their babies soon after birth and remember the scent. It's one of the first things they do.

Name Tags

Step three: Name Tags. Baby calls and smells are like name tags. That way, mothers feed only their own babies and find them again in a crowd.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Unique. Learned. Strong. Like one.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A lamb and its mother call to each other across a field. Moms sniff newborns. Smells are like name tags. Lambs know mom's voice.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Stand in a quiet room with a friend, with space to move safely. Close your eyes. Try to find each other by voice alone. Walk slowly with hands out in front. That's like a lamb finding its mother.
