How does a placenta feed a baby before it is born?
In placental mammals, a special organ called the placenta grows in the mother’s body. It connects to the baby by a cord. The mother’s blood brings food and oxygen to the placenta and passes them to the baby. The baby’s waste goes the other way. The placenta helps the baby grow longer before birth, so it is more ready for the world.
