What makes an animal a mammal?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What makes an animal a mammal?

The Big Idea

Dogs, whales, bats, and people! They look so different. What makes them all mammals?

Milk for Babies

Step one: Milk for Babies. Mammals are animals that make milk to feed their babies. No other animals do it quite the same way.

Hair or Fur

Step two: Hair or Fur. Mammals have hair or fur at some time in their lives. Even whales have a few whiskers.

Warm Bodies

Step three: Warm Bodies. Their bodies make their own heat, so they stay warm in cold weather. A mammal also has three tiny bones in each ear and a muscle called the diaphragm under its lungs. You're a mammal too!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! For babies. Or fur. Made inside. Three each.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Dogs, bats, whales, and people are all mammals. Even whales have a few whiskers. Mammals have a diaphragm. You are a mammal.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a mammal checklist: milk, hair, warm body, three ear bones, diaphragm. Use it on a cat. Then try a frog. Then try a dolphin. Which ones are mammals?
