Why do most baby reptiles take care of themselves?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do most baby reptiles take care of themselves?

The Big Idea

Human babies need lots of help. But most baby reptiles are on their own from day one! Why?

Moms Leave

Step one: Moms Leave. Most reptile mothers lay their eggs and leave. When the eggs hatch, the babies already know how to find food and hide.

Instincts

Step two: Instincts. They are born with their instincts, which are skills they didn't have to learn. Hatchling turtles dig out and head to water without any help.

A Few Helpers

Step three: A Few Helpers. A few reptiles, such as crocodiles, do stay close and protect their young. But being independent from day one is normal for most baby reptiles.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! After laying. Built in. Stay close. On their own.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Hatchling turtles head to water without any help from adults. Instincts are built in. Crocodile moms stay close. Born knowing how.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! List five things you needed help with as a baby. List five things a hatchling does alone. Compare the lists. What is different? Ask a grown-up what you were like as a baby.

Outro

Most reptile mothers lay their eggs and leave, so babies hatch with built-in instincts for finding food and hiding. A few reptiles, like crocodiles, protect their young, but most are independent from day one. Science is amazing! What will you discover next?
