What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Can a turtle feel when you touch its shell?

The Big Idea

A turtle shell looks like a hard helmet. But can a turtle feel through it? Let's find out!

Living Shell

Step one: Living Shell. A turtle's shell isn't like a hard hat. It's part of the turtle's body, made of bone with a layer of keratin on top.

Nerves

Step two: Nerves. The shell has nerves beneath it. A turtle can feel pressure and gentle touches on its shell.

Pulling In

Step three: Pulling In. That's why a turtle may pull in when something bumps it. A shell looks hard, but it is a living part of the animal.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Underneath. On top. Feel touch. Part of it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A turtle's shell is joined to its backbone and ribs. Turtles feel touch on their shells. Shells are a living part of the turtle. Never tap or bang on a turtle's shell.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Tap a fingernail on a table. Notice you feel it at the base of your nail. That's where the nerves are. Think about how a turtle might feel through its shell. Why should we be gentle with turtles?
