Book 31, Question 131 · Video
Why do birdwatchers compare a mystery bird to a robin?
Bird size is a helpful clue. Birdwatchers compare a mystery bird to familiar ones: smaller than a sparrow, between a sparrow and a robin, bigger than a robin but smaller than a crow, or larger than a crow. A hummingbird fits in the palm of your hand, while a swan is taller than a toddler. Size is easier to guess if you compare, instead of judging it alone.
