Book 31, Question 72 · Video
Why do some birds lay one egg and others a dozen?
The number of eggs is called a clutch. Albatrosses and penguins lay just one or two, because they spend months feeding each chick. Ducks and quail may lay ten or more, because their chicks leave the nest quickly and many are needed. Birds adjust clutch size to match how much food they can find and how many chicks they can raise.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some birds lay one egg and others a dozen?
The Big Idea
Some birds lay just one egg. Others lay a dozen! Why the difference?
Small Clutches
Step one: Small Clutches. The number of eggs in a nest is called a clutch. Albatrosses and penguins lay just one or two, because they spend months feeding each chick.
Big Clutches
Step two: Big Clutches. Ducks and quail may lay ten or more. Their chicks leave the nest quickly, and many are needed.
Matching Food
Step three: Matching Food. Birds adjust clutch size to match how much food they can find. It also depends on how many chicks they can raise.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! One or two. Just one. Ten or more. Three to five.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Many songbirds lay three to five eggs. A clutch is a set of eggs. Ducks lay big clutches. Food affects clutch size.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Make a chart with two columns. In one, list birds with small clutches. In the other, list birds with big clutches. Add a note about how long their chicks need care. Do you see a pattern?
Outro
