Why is an eggshell strong even though it is thin?

Video · 1:50 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 31

An eggshell is curved like an arch, and arches spread out pressure so that no one spot gets crushed. When you push on the ends of an egg, the force travels around the curve of the shell. That makes it hard to break from the outside. But a chick can break out from the inside using its egg tooth, because it pushes on one weak spot.

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is an eggshell strong even though it is thin?

The Big Idea

Eggshells are thin. But they can be surprisingly strong! Why is that?

Arch Shapes

Step one: Arch Shapes. An eggshell is curved like an arch. Arches spread out pressure so that no one spot gets crushed.

Push on the Ends

Step two: Push on the Ends. When you push on the ends of an egg, the force travels around the curve of the shell. That makes it hard to break from the outside.

Breaking Out

Step three: Breaking Out. But a chick can break out from the inside using its egg tooth. It taps on one small spot again and again, instead of pushing on the whole curve.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Spreads force. Travels around. Strong shape. Taps one spot.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The same arch idea helps hold up stone bridges. Egg ends are very strong. Chicks tap their way out from inside. Thin shells can still be strong.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask a grown-up to clean four eggshell halves. Set them dome-up on a table in a square. Gently rest a light book on top. Add books one at a time until a shell cracks. Shell edges can be sharp, so let a grown-up clean up, and wash your hands.

Outro

An eggshell is curved like an arch, so pressure spreads around the shell instead of crushing one spot. That makes it strong from the outside, but a chick can still tap its way out from inside with its egg tooth. Science is amazing! The world is full of surprises.
