Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a chick breathe inside a sealed egg?

The Big Idea

A chick grows inside a hard shell. It seems sealed up tight. So how does it breathe?

Tiny Holes

Step one: Tiny Holes. An eggshell looks solid, but it's covered with thousands of tiny holes called pores. They are far too small to see without a magnifier.

Air In and Out

Step two: Air In and Out. Oxygen slips in through the pores, and carbon dioxide slips out. So the chick gets fresh air the whole time it grows.

An Air Pocket

Step three: An Air Pocket. Inside the egg at the blunt end is a small pocket of air. The chick uses it just before it hatches. The shell keeps germs out but still lets the baby breathe.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Thousands of them. Comes in. At the blunt end. Keeps germs out.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A chicken eggshell has several thousand pores. Oxygen slips in through the pores. The air pocket is at the blunt end. The shell blocks germs.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, fill a clear bowl with warm, not hot, tap water. Gently place a raw egg in the bowl. Watch closely for tiny bubbles on the shell. Those bubbles may show air escaping through the pores. Wash your hands with soap afterward.

Outro
