Video · 1:51 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 30

A big filter bed has layers of sand and gravel, and sometimes charcoal on top. Water trickles down through the tiny spaces between the grains. Bits of dirt and some germs get caught or stick to the sand, and the water comes out clearer. The filter is cleaned by sending water backward through it. Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What happens inside a big bed of sand and gravel?

The Big Idea

Treatment plants use giant beds of sand! Water trickles through. What happens inside?

Layers

Step one: Layers. A big filter bed has layers of sand and gravel, and sometimes charcoal on top. Water trickles down through the tiny spaces between the grains.

Catching Dirt

Step two: Catching Dirt. Bits of dirt and some germs get caught or stick to the sand. The water that comes out the bottom is clearer than the water that went in.

Cleaning the Filter

Step three: Cleaning the Filter. The filter is cleaned by sending water backward through it to wash out the trapped dirt. Slow sand filters also grow a thin living layer of tiny life that eats germs.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! On top. Middle. Bottom. Cleans it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Sand filters are one of the oldest ways to clean water. Living layers eat germs. Cleaned by backwashing. Water comes out clearer.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, cut a plastic bottle and add a coffee filter, sand, and gravel. Pour muddy water through. Compare before and after. Do not drink it. How much clearer did it get?

Outro
