Book 30, Question 68 · Video
How do scientists tell the age of a fish?
Inside a fish's head are small ear stones called otoliths. They grow a little every day, adding layers like tree rings. Layers form faster in summer and slower in winter, so counting the rings tells the fish's age. Scientists can also read scales the same way. Knowing ages helps them see how healthy a fish population is.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do scientists tell the age of a fish?
The Big Idea
Fish don't have birthdays! But scientists can tell their age. How?
Ear Stones
Step one: Ear Stones. Inside a fish's head are small ear stones called otoliths. They help fish sense balance and sound.
Growth Rings
Step two: Growth Rings. Otoliths grow a little every day, adding layers like tree rings. Layers form faster in summer and slower in winter, so counting the rings tells the fish's age.
Scales Too
Step three: Scales Too. Scientists can also read fish scales the same way. Knowing fish ages helps them see how healthy a fish population is, and whether young fish are growing up well.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Ear stones. Count them. Have rings too. How healthy?
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Otoliths help fish sense balance and sound. Rings like trees. Summer rings are wider. Ages show health.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Find a tree stump. Look closely at the rings. Count them from the center out. How old was the tree? Imagine counting a fish's rings!
Outro
Fish have small ear stones called otoliths that add layers like tree rings, growing faster in summer and slower in winter. Counting those rings, or rings on scales, tells a fish's age and helps scientists check a population's health. Science is amazing! Remember, every big discovery starts with a small question. Keep looking, keep learning, and keep asking why! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
