How deep are the Great Lakes?

Video · 2:02 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 30

They differ a lot. Lake Superior is the deepest, at about 406 meters (1,333 feet), enough to hide the Empire State Building. Lake Ontario reaches about 244 meters. Lake Michigan is about 280 meters at its deepest, and Lake Huron about 230 meters. Lake Erie is the shallowest, only about 64 meters at its deepest point, so it warms up quickly and also freezes over more often.

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How deep are the Great Lakes?

The Big Idea

The Great Lakes are very different depths! Some are deep, and one is shallow. How deep are they?

Superior

Step one: Superior. Lake Superior is the deepest, at about 406 meters, or 1,333 feet. That's deep enough to hide the Empire State Building.

The Middle Lakes

Step two: The Middle Lakes. Lake Michigan is about 280 meters at its deepest, Lake Ontario about 244 meters, and Lake Huron about 230 meters. They're all very deep too.

Erie

Step three: Erie. Lake Erie is the shallowest, only about 64 meters at its deepest point. So it warms up quickly in summer and freezes over more often in winter.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! About 406 m. About 280 m. About 244 m. About 64 m.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Lake Erie's average depth is only about 19 meters. Superior could hide a skyscraper. Erie warms fastest. Erie freezes most often.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, find a safe stretch of sidewalk. Let one step stand for 10 feet. Chalk a line for Lake Erie's depth. Chalk a much longer line for Superior. How do they compare?

Outro

The Great Lakes differ a lot in depth. Superior is deepest at about 406 meters, Michigan, Ontario, and Huron are a few hundred meters deep, and Erie is shallowest at about 64 meters, so it warms quickly and freezes more often. Science is amazing! Keep asking questions! The more you look around, the more wonders you will find, so keep your eyes open!
