Why Do Firefighters Use Axes and Hoses?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do firefighters use axes and hoses?

The Big Idea

A fire needs fuel, heat, and air. A hose steals heat with water, and an axe makes a path. So people and water can reach the right spot! Let's find out how it works, in three easy steps!

Step 1

Step one: the crew arrives! The truck brings water, a hose, and tools. It's like a cool drink for a hot fire.

Step 2

Step two: the hose cools the fire! Water cools the burning material and makes steam that can crowd out air. Different nozzles can make a hard stream, or a wide fog. Rescue teams use similar tools after storms, too.

Step 3

Step three: the axe opens access! The axe is a wedge with a handle, used for opening stuck doors or weak panels, only when that's the safe plan. Tools serve rescue first, and cleanup second. That's how the two tools team up.

A Closer Look

Let's look at the two tools! The nozzle shapes the water, and the coupling joins the hose. The jacket is the tough outer layer. The axe has a handle, a heavy head, and a wedge blade. Every part has an important job to do!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! If you remove fuel, heat, or air, the fire weakens. A fog spray can protect a firefighter like a water curtain. Axes stay sheathed on the truck until a captain calls for them. Real fires are for firefighters only. Kids get low and get out, and practice an escape plan with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, blow out a birthday candle, and then cover a second candle with a cup. Which move stole heat? Which one stole air? How is a hose more like one of those moves? Scientists always write down what they see. Have fun!
