Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do bakers weigh instead of just scoop?

The Big Idea

A scoop measures space, but a scale measures mass. Flour packed tight in a cup is more flour than fluffy flour. So weighing keeps a recipe honest! Let's find out how it works, in three easy steps!

Step 1

Step one: the recipe calls for grams! Grams tell you exactly how much stuff to use, no matter how fluffy the pile looks. Same cup, but two different amounts!

Step 2

Step two: put the bowl on the scale! Then press tare, which means the scale ignores the bowl and sets itself to zero. It works like a seesaw for numbers.

Step 3

Step three: the ingredient goes in! Pour the flour until the number matches the recipe. Every batch ends up using the same amount! That's how bakers make cookies taste the same every time. Knowing the parts helps us understand the whole idea.

A Closer Look

Let's look at a kitchen scale! The platform is where the bowl sits. The tare button sets the display back to zero. And the display shows the weight in grams. Every part has an important job to do!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Tare means ignore the bowl, so you only count the food. Grams are a baker's favorite unit, because they split up easily. Humidity can make flour clump, which changes a scooped cup even more. Ovens and mixers are for grown-ups. And don't taste batter that has eggs in it! Wow, those are some amazing facts to share with your friends!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Scoop two cups of flour, one fluffed and one packed, with a grown-up in the kitchen. Then weigh both of them. Did the cups match? Why did the scale disagree with the cup? Write down what you learned. Happy baking! Then share what you found with a friend or a grown-up.

Outro

A scale is the baker's secret to a perfect batch! Keep on wondering! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
