Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a hammer have a heavy head?
The Big Idea
A hammer is like a small energy pack. A heavy head at the end of a handle stores motion. Then it dumps that motion into one tiny spot on a nail! Let's find out how it works, in three easy steps!
Step 1
Step one: the swing adds speed! The handle works like a lever, and it flings the head forward faster than your hand moves. Think of it as a slingshot for motion.
Step 2
Step two: the head carries the motion! The head is made of dense metal, so it holds on to that motion until the very last moment. It's a little like a tiny bowling ball.
Step 3
Step three: the hit meets the nail! When the head suddenly stops on the nail, the stored motion becomes a short, strong push. The wood fibers part, and the nail sinks in! That's how a hammer gets a nail moving.
A Closer Look
Let's look at the parts of a hammer! The handle is the long part you hold. The heavy head has a flat face that hits the nail. And the claw pulls nails back out. Every part has an important job to do!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A rubber mallet spreads out the hit, so it dents things less. A head that's too light bounces, and one that's too heavy is hard to aim. A longer handle multiplies the swing. Use hammers and nails only with a grown-up, and wear eye protection.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Tap a tack into scrap wood with a spoon, then with a small metal wrench, with a grown-up to help. Which one sinks it more easily? What did the extra mass change? Write down what you notice! Scientists always write down what they see. Have fun!
