Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a playground slide feel fast?
The Big Idea
A slide trades height for speed. Gravity pulls you down the slope. And a smooth surface steals less speed from friction, so you arrive at the bottom in a rush! Let's find out how it works, in three easy steps!
Step 1
Step one: gravity pulls! When you sit at the top, you have stored height, which is stored energy. The slope turns that height into motion. That's why the top of a slide feels so high.
Step 2
Step two: the surface slips! Smooth plastic keeps friction low, so less of your speed gets stolen on the way down. The less the friction, the more speed you keep.
Step 3
Step three: the curve slows you down! Each meter down adds more rush, and then the end of the slide flattens out, so you finish in a safe run-out, not a crash. Water or a waxed seat makes a slide even faster, so wait your turn!
A Closer Look
Let's look at a playground slide! The steep start is where you build speed. The bedway is the slide part you sit on. And the exit curve slows you down at the end. Every part has an important job to do!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Metal slides can get scorching hot in the sun, so test with a grown-up's hand first. Tall slides need a clear landing zone. Sand on the bedway acts like tiny brakes. One rider at a time, feet first, with a grown-up nearby.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Race a block down a book ramp, then raise the book, on a table with a grown-up. Did the steeper ramp win? What did the extra height change into? Write down what you notice! Scientists always write down what they see. Have fun!
