Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do sneakers grip the ground?

The Big Idea

Sneaker soles are made of patterned rubber. The pattern bites into tiny hills on the ground. The soft rubber also flexes, so more of the shoe actually touches. That's grip! Let's find out how it works, in three easy steps!

Step 1

Step one: the rubber flexes! When you step down, your weight presses the sole onto the ground, and soft rubber wraps around the tiny bumps. More rubber touching the ground means more friction.

Step 2

Step two: the tread bites! The grooves and bumpy lugs catch tiny edges, so your shoe can't skate away. Tiny edges biting the ground is what stops the slide.

Step 3

Step three: the water escapes! Channels in the sole let water and dirt squeeze out, so the rubber can meet the floor. Then friction turns your push into a step, instead of a slip! That's why worn-out sneakers can feel slippery on a wet floor.

A Closer Look

Let's flip over a sneaker sole! The lugs are the little bumps that bite. The grooves are channels for water and dirt. And the rubber is soft enough to flex. Every part has an important job to do!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Court shoes stay flatter for sideways cuts, and trail shoes grow knobby lugs. A worn-smooth sole can feel like ice on a wet tile floor. Cleaning mud out of the grooves brings the grip back. Be careful on wet stairs, and ask a grown-up to be nearby.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Slide a sneaker and a hard dress shoe across a dry board, then a damp board, with a grown-up. Which pair wins on the wet board? What did the tread change? Write down what you learn! Scientists always write down what they see. Have fun!

Rubber and tread help you stay on your feet! Keep on wondering! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
