Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does an echo come back?

The Big Idea

An echo is a sound's return trip. Sound is a wave in the air, and a hard wall can bounce the wave back, a little bit late, so you hear yourself twice. Soft things like couches soak up sound, while hard things like cliffs, gyms, and tunnels bounce it. If the bounce takes longer than a tenth of a second, your brain hears a separate copy. Bats and submarines use echoes to measure distance!

You Make a Sound

Step one: you make a sound. A shout or a clap shoves the air into waves. The waves spread out in every direction.

Wall Bounces Them

Step two: the wall bounces them. The waves spread until they meet a hard surface. A smooth cliff or a brick wall sends the energy back.

Ears Hear a Copy

Step three: your ears hear a copy. Sound is fast, but a far wall still adds a delay. So the late wave arrives as, hello, hello.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at an echo! A person makes a sound. The outgoing waves travel to a hard wall. The wall bounces them back. And the returning waves reach the ears!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Sound travels about 343 meters per second in air on a cool day. A wall 170 meters away sends an echo back in about 1 second. Fog and wind can scramble an echo. And rugs and curtains steal the bounce, so those rooms sound quiet!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Clap in two places. With a grown-up nearby, clap in a closet full of coats. Then clap in an empty hallway. Which sound lasts longer? Which surfaces stole the bounce?

Outro

Echoes show us that sound can travel out and bounce right back to us. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
