Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a whistle get so loud?

The Big Idea

A whistle is a tiny wind instrument. Your breath slams into a sharp edge and a small chamber, which chops the air into fast pulses that your ears hear as a piercing tone. In some whistles, a little cork ball called a pea rattles around and breaks the airflow into bursts. Those bursts stack into a sound that cuts through a noisy field. A whistle without a pea uses just the shaped chamber, so it still screams even when it gets wet.

You Blow

Step one: you blow. A fast jet of air enters the mouthpiece. The air races toward a sharp edge.

Air Hits an Edge

Step two: the air hits an edge. The stream splits and flutters. That flutter is what starts the sound.

Chamber Rings

Step three: the chamber rings. The hollow body picks one strong pitch. Then high, sharp sound waves spread across the whole field!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a whistle! You blow into the mouthpiece. The air slot splits the air on a sharp edge. The pea rattles in the chamber. And the sound leaves through the exit hole!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! High notes travel well, because their waves are tight and easy to notice. A wet pea can stick, which is why some sports whistles have no pea. Covering the exit hole changes the pitch, like a tiny flute. And trains, kettles, lifeguards, and coaches use the same edge-tone trick!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Compare two sounds. Blow across a bottle top, then blow into a whistle. Which sound carries farther across a room? What did the chamber add? Clean the whistle before anyone else uses it.

Outro

Whistles show us that a small chamber can turn breath into a big, bright sound. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
