Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do swim goggles keep water out?

The Big Idea

Goggles are like dry rooms for your eyes. A soft gasket makes a seal against your skin, and a strap holds it tight. A good seal plus a small pocket of air keeps the pressure even, so water stays outside. Clear lenses also bend light, so things look sharper underwater than with your bare eyes.

Lens Sits

Step one: the lens sits. A plastic window covers each eye. You can see clearly, and water can't touch your eyes.

Gasket Touches

Step two: the gasket touches. Soft silicone makes a ring against your face. Then the elastic strap pulls the ring closed.

Air Stays In

Step three: the air stays in. A small dry pocket of air stays in front of each eye. No gap means no drip, until the seal shifts!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at goggles! The lens is the clear window. The gasket is the soft part that touches your face. The nose bridge joins the two lenses. And the strap, with its buckle, holds it all tight!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! An anti-fog coating stops warm breath from clouding the lens. A strap that is too tight can leave marks, and still leak if the gasket gets twisted. Rinse off chlorine after swimming to keep the silicone soft. And never yank goggles by the lenses, because that can pop the seal!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Always with a grown-up. Press dry goggles onto a plate of water. Does the seal hold a little air bubble? Now try one hair under the gasket. What happens to the seal?

Outro

Goggles show us that a tight seal can keep a little dry world around your eyes. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
