Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do traffic lights change?
The Big Idea
A traffic light is a turn-taking machine. It gives each direction a safe slice of time, so cars and walkers do not all move at once. A controller box runs a timer, and sensors in the road or cameras can skip a turn if no car is waiting. Some lights even talk to nearby lights, so a whole street can pulse green like a wave!
Sensor Watches
Step one: the sensor watches. A loop of wire in the pavement, or a camera, notices cars. It tells the controller who is waiting.
Timer Counts
Step two: the timer counts. The controller box gives seconds to each color. One street gets green, while the cross street stays red.
Yellow Warns, Red Holds
Step three: yellow warns, and red holds. A short yellow light says, stop if you can. Everyone facing red waits until their turn comes back around.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a traffic light! Red is on top. Amber, or yellow, is in the middle. Green is on the bottom. And the controller box runs the whole show!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Red is on top, so color-blind drivers can still use position. A burned bulb can confuse drivers, so cities check lights often. In some towns, emergency vehicles can trigger a special green. And walk signals, school flashers, and ramp meters are cousins of the same idea!
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Time a real light. With a grown-up, time how many seconds a light stays green. Then time how many seconds it stays red. Which is longer? Is it fair for the busier street?
