Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do buildings need doors that open?

The Big Idea

Walls keep weather out, but people, air, and furniture must still go in and out. A door is a framed hole in a wall that you can move! Let's see how doors work.

Cut an Opening, Hang a Panel

Step one: cut an opening, and hang a panel. Builders leave a hole in the wall, called a doorway. A slab of wood, metal, or glass fills that hole.

Add a Swing

Step two: add a swing. Hinges or sliders let one panel swing or roll aside. They let the panel move, without lifting it.

Latch It, Seal the Gaps

Step three: latch it shut, and seal the gaps. A knob and strike plate keep wind from blowing the door open. Weatherstripping stops drafts around the edges, so heat and rain stay where they belong.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a doorway! The frame surrounds the door. The door slab is the panel that moves. The hinge lets it swing. The latch keeps it shut, and weatherstripping seals the gaps.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A door that swings the wrong way can block an escape path, so codes say which way school doors must open. Revolving doors save heat, because they never leave a wide open hole. Automatic doors use sensors, so hands stay free. Fire doors are extra heavy, and close by themselves, so smoke can't race down a hall.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Stand in a doorway, and feel the air. Then close the door. On a cold day, which way keeps the room warmer? Why do you think so?

Doors are moving walls, with hinges, latches, and seals. Come on in! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
