Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do buildings have foundations?
The Big Idea
A foundation is the hidden bottom of a building. It spreads the weight out, so the house does not sink or tip over. Think of it as a giant, buried foot!
Dig and Pour
Step one: dig the trench, then pour the footing. Workers dig a trench until they reach firm soil or rock. Then they pour a wide concrete footing. Soft soil squishes. A wide footing works like snowshoes, and keeps the walls level!
Add Steel Bars
Step two: add steel bars. Steel bars go inside the concrete. They add strength, a bit like bones inside your body. Concrete is great when it's squeezed, and steel helps when it's stretched.
Raise Walls, Pack Dirt
Step three: raise the walls, and pack the dirt. Walls or posts rise from the footing and stay locked in place. Then dirt is packed back around them, so frost and rain cannot wash it loose.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a foundation! The footing is the wide base at the bottom. The stem wall rises from the footing. Soil is packed all around it. And the wall rises above the ground.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some skyscrapers sit on piles driven more than 100 feet down! Frost can heave a house if the footing is too shallow. The pyramids have huge stone bases that still sit level. Bridges, playgrounds, and even swing sets need a solid base, so they don't lean.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Stand a cardboard box on four pencils. Then stand the same box on a wide book. Gently poke each one. Which base tips less? Why do you think so?
