Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do power lines hum?
The Big Idea
Power lines carry alternating current, which rushes back and forth in the wire. In many countries, it flips direction 60 times every second. In others, it's 50 times! That pulse makes the wires and nearby parts shake a tiny bit, and the shake is a hum.
Current Alternates
Step one: the current alternates. Alternating current flips direction, over and over, many times each second. And a flowing current has a magnetic field around it!
Field Pulses, Wire Shakes
Step two: the field pulses, and the wire vibrates. As the current flips, the magnetic field grows and shrinks, again and again. That tugs on the wires and nearby parts, and they vibrate, just a tiny hair's width.
Air Wobbles, You Hear a Hum
Step three: the air wobbles, and you hear a hum. The shaking wires push the air, and that makes sound waves. Your ear hears a low hum. Stay far away from real power lines, though!
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a power pole! The lines carry the current. Insulators hold the lines away from the pole. A transformer changes the voltage, and it can hum, too. And the wobbling air makes the hum you hear.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! High-voltage lines are not toys. Your ear hears the hum as a musical note, near a B-flat! Rain and dirty insulators can make the hum louder. If a line falls, stay back and tell a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Stand outside with a grown-up, near a safe sidewalk. Listen carefully. Can you hear a hum? Try again after it rains. Does the hum change? And never climb a pole!

A tiny shake, a pulse of magnetism, and a hum you can hear. Science is everywhere! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
