Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does steam rise?

The Big Idea

Steam is water that has turned into a gas. Heat makes water molecules fly apart, so hot steam is lighter than the cool air around it. And lighter stuff floats up, like a bubble!

Water Boils, Gas Forms

Step one: water boils, and a gas forms. Heat adds energy to the water. The molecules speed up until they fly free as steam. Those molecules are far apart, so hot steam is spread out and weighs less.

Density Drops

Step two: the density drops. Density tells us how much stuff is packed into a space. Steam has fewer molecules in the same space. So it has low density, and low-density stuff floats on high-density stuff.

Cool Air Pushes Under

Step three: cool air pushes under, and the steam rises. The heavier cool air sinks and slides underneath the light steam. That pushes it up, a lift called buoyancy. Then the puff climbs, mixes with the air, and fades.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at steam! Pure steam is actually invisible. The white wisp you see is tiny droplets of water. They form when the steam cools down. And cool air slides underneath and lifts it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Steam can burn you badly, so keep a grown-up nearby. Chimneys, hot-air balloons, and storm clouds use rising warm air, too. Never lean over a kettle. If you use a stove, do it with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, watch a hot mug from the side. Where does the wisp go first: up, sideways, or down? Keep a safe distance, and never lean over the steam. Why do you think it goes that way?

Outro

Hot steam floats up because it's lighter than cool air. Rise and shine! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
