Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a microwave heat food?
The Big Idea
A microwave oven makes short radio waves, called microwaves. Those invisible waves make the water molecules in your food wiggle and spin. Wiggling molecules bump into their neighbors, and the food gets warm!
Magnetron Makes Waves
Step one: a part called the magnetron makes the waves. When you press start, the magnetron makes microwaves. The metal walls bounce them around, so they fill the whole box. Don't worry, the metal mesh on the door keeps the waves inside!
Water Molecules Wiggle
Step two: the water molecules wiggle. Most food has water in it. The waves push and pull on those tiny water molecules, so they twist and spin. It happens billions of times every second!
Bumps Make Heat
Step three: the bumps make heat. The spinning molecules bump into their neighbors, and that shares the energy around. The food warms up! Steam can rise, so have a grown-up nearby, and watch out for hot spots.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look inside a microwave! The magnetron makes the waves. Metal walls bounce the waves around inside. The turntable spins the food, so it heats more evenly. And the door mesh keeps the waves safely inside.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The plate often stays cooler than the soup, because it has less water to wiggle! Never run an empty microwave. Never put metal foil in, unless a grown-up says the dish is safe. Stir your food, because heat can hide in the middle.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, fill two cups. Put water in one, and dry rice in the other. Heat them for just a few seconds. Then carefully feel them. Go slow, because they can be hot! Which one feels warmer? Think about where the water is!
