Why Do Fans Cool Us?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do fans cool us?

The Big Idea

A fan blows room air across your skin. Sweat evaporates faster, and evaporating water takes heat with it, so you feel cooler. A fan does not make cold air. It helps your sweat steal heat! Even a small fan can make a big difference.

Step 1

Step one: you are warm, and the fan spins. Body heat sits on your skin, in a thin blanket of warm air. The fan's blades shove air toward you. Wind on a bike ride, and blowing on soup, use the same evaporate-and-carry-heat trick.

Step 2

Step two: the breeze hits your skin. Moving air shoves away the thin blanket of warm air. Now cooler air can reach your skin. The air only feels cool because your body loses heat faster.

Step 3

Step three: sweat evaporates. Sweat water turns into vapor, and steals heat as it goes. Your skin temperature drops a bit, and you feel cooler. Water takes heat energy along with it as it turns into vapor.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at cooling! The fan makes airflow toward you. A sweat drop sits on your skin. And evaporation carries the heat away. Airflow plus evaporation equals cooler you! Each part of the diagram plays a role.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A fan is not a replacement for shade on a very hot day. Drink water when you are hot. In a sealed empty room, a fan does not lower the thermometer. It cools people, not the air itself. And keep your fingers away from the blades. Fans are great for comfort, but stay safe around them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Wet a finger. Hold it in still air. Then hold it in front of a fan. Which one dries faster? Ask a grown-up to be nearby.

A fan helps sweat carry heat away. That is how fans cool us down! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
