Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do light bulbs get warm?

The Big Idea

A bulb turns electric energy into light. Old bulbs waste a lot as heat, and even LEDs make a little warmth. Not all the electricity becomes light. Some becomes leftover heat! Toasters and space heaters use the same resistance-makes-heat idea on purpose.

Step 1

Step one: current enters the bulb. Electricity travels through the wires to the bulb. But the path inside the bulb is not perfectly easy. Think of rubbing your hands, which also makes heat.

Step 2

Step two: atoms jiggle. In a classic bulb, a thin wire glows because current slams through it. That resistance shakes the atoms, and makes heat plus light. An LED is a much smarter way to make light.

Step 3

Step three: the light escapes, and the heat remains. Some of the energy becomes photons, which is light. The rest is heat, so your hand feels warmth. Do not touch a hot bulb. That heat is like a little energy leftover.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at two kinds of bulbs! The filament is the thin wire in a classic bulb. The glass holds it, and the base screws into the lamp. An LED makes light inside a chip, so it stays much cooler. LEDs waste far less energy! Different bulbs make light in different ways.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Old-style bulbs can get hot enough to start a fire if covered. An LED stays much cooler and uses less power. Never put a cloth over a lamp. And wait before you change a bulb, so it can cool down. Newer bulbs are better at saving energy.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, feel the air near an LED lamp after one minute. Then feel the air near an older bulb. Which one is warmer? And do not touch the bulbs themselves. Remember to be careful around hot things.

Outro

Bulbs turn electricity into light, and a bit of heat. Bright thinking, explorers! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
