Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we see lightning before thunder?

The Big Idea

Lightning and thunder start together. Light reaches your eyes almost instantly. Sound needs time to cross the air. Light sprints, and sound jogs! Fireworks and a faraway hammer show the same light then sound trick.

Step 1

Step one: charge builds, and lightning flashes. Clouds rub together and stack up electric charge. Then a giant spark jumps, and that's lightning. You can hear the boom most clearly when the storm is nearby.

Step 2

Step two: the air explodes. The spark heats the air so fast that it slams outward. That makes a sound wave, and we call it thunder. A big rumble can last a long time as the sound comes from different parts of the sky.

Step 3

Step three: light wins the race. Light travels about 300,000 kilometers every second. Sound moves only about 340 meters per second, so the boom catches up a little later. That gap grows longer the farther away the storm is.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a storm! Light is very fast, so you see the flash right away. Sound is slower, so the thunder arrives later. And the gap between them is the storm's stopwatch. Count the gap to guess the distance! Each clue helps you know how far away it is.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Count the seconds after the flash. Divide by 3 to guess kilometers, or by 5 to guess miles. If thunder follows right away, the storm is close. Go inside. Lightning can strike the same place twice. And never stand under a lone tree in a storm. Storms are exciting, but staying safe comes first.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, watch from a window. Count the seconds from the flash to the boom. Track three flashes. Is the storm getting closer or farther? Write down your numbers.

Outro

Light is faster than sound, so lightning comes first. Stay safe in storms! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
