Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do magnets stick?
The Big Idea
A magnet makes an invisible field. Iron, nickel, and some steels feel that field and get pulled in. Inside the magnet, many tiny spinning electrons line up and pull on iron! That is why a magnet can grab a paper clip without touching it first.
Step 1
Step one: electrons spin. Each iron atom is a tiny magnet, because of its spinning electrons. In a magnet, many tiny magnetic regions point the same way. Speakers, fridge doors, maglev trains, and hospital MRI machines use magnets.
Step 2
Step two: the field spreads. Their combined field spreads out around the magnet. Invisible lines loop from the north pole to the south pole. Heat a magnet too much, and it can lose its lining up.
Step 3
Step three: iron feels it, and they stick. Nearby iron atoms line up too. Then attraction pulls the metal to the magnet, and they stick. The metal jumps toward the magnet, and clicks into place.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a magnet! Every magnet has a north pole and a south pole. Field lines show where the magnet pulls. And an iron nail gets pulled in. Opposite poles attract; same poles shove apart! Together, the poles and the field explain the pull.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The word magnet comes from Magnesia, a place in Greece. Opposite poles attract, and same poles shove apart. Earth itself is a giant, weak magnet. And never swallow magnets. Keep them away from cards and old screens. Magnets are all around us, working quietly.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Test what a fridge magnet can pick up. Try paper, a coin, a key, and some plastic. Make a yes or no table. What do the things that stick have in common? Pay attention to what is made of iron.
