Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do cars have headlights?

The Big Idea

Headlights throw a beam of light, so the driver can see the road, signs, and animals after dark. They also warn other people that you are coming. Lights let you see the road, and they let the road see you! That is why cars have a pair of bright eyes.

Step 1

Step one: night falls, and you switch on the lights. When the road goes dark, the driver flips a switch. Electricity flows to the lamp inside each headlight. Low beams aim down, so you do not blind the other driver.

Step 2

Step two: the lamp glows. The lamp can be an LED, a halogen bulb, or an older type of bulb. Whichever kind it is, electricity makes it shine. High beams reach farther on empty roads.

Step 3

Step three: the reflector aims the beam. A shiny bowl of mirror and a lens shape the light into a useful beam, not a wild glow. Now the beam hits the road, so you can see paint, people, and curves. That way the driver can see far enough to stop in time.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a headlight! The bulb, or LED, makes the light. The reflector is a shiny bowl that sends light forward. And the lens shapes the beam that shines on the road. Bulb, reflector, lens, beam! Together, these parts make one useful beam.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Early cars used oil lamps. LED headlights use less power and last longer. Dirty lenses block some of the light. And never stare into a real headlight. Bikes, trains, ships, and even helmets use lamps to see, and to be seen.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! In a dim room with a grown-up, shine a flashlight through clear tape. Then shine it through dusty tape on glass. Which beam is stronger? And never look straight into the light. Compare them side by side.

Outro

Headlights help us see, and help others see us. What a bright idea! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
