Which mulch keeps garden soil moistest?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Which mulch keeps garden soil moistest?

The Big Idea

Mulch helps soil hold water! But which kind works best? Let's test it.

Four Pots

Step one: Four Pots. Fill four pots with the same soil. Cover one with straw, one with shredded leaves, one with wood chips, and leave one bare.

Water and Check

Step two: Water and Check. Water them all the same amount. Then weigh them or feel the soil each day.

Results

Step three: Results. The mulched pots will likely stay damp longer than the bare one. Measuring water loss shows how mulch protects, and helps you choose the best mulch for your garden.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Pot one. Pot two. Pot three. The control.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Straw and leaves are usually free or cheap. Bare soil dries fastest. Weigh to measure water. Graph your results.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Set up four pots with different mulches. Water them equally. Weigh each pot every day. Make a graph of the weights. Which mulch kept the most water?
