What does fertilizer do for plants?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What does fertilizer do for plants?

The Big Idea

Plants make their own food from sunlight! So why do they need fertilizer? Let's find out.

Sugar and Minerals

Step one: Sugar and Minerals. Plants make their own sugar using sunlight. But they also need small amounts of minerals from the soil to build leaves, roots, and fruit.

Adding Back

Step two: Adding Back. When soil is short on these nutrients, fertilizer adds them back. It's like a vitamin boost, not food.

Natural and Careful

Step three: Natural and Careful. Compost and manure are natural fertilizers. Too much fertilizer can harm plants, so follow directions and let a grown-up handle it.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Makes sugar. Carries food. Build parts. Natural boost.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Plants need about 17 different elements to grow. Like a vitamin boost. Compost is natural. Too much can harm.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Plant one bean in soil mixed with compost. Plant another in plain soil. Give both the same light and water. Measure them each week. Which one grew better?

Outro

Fertilizer adds back missing nutrients like a vitamin boost, and compost is a natural choice, but too much can harm. Science is amazing! The world is full of surprises.
