Book 29, Question 102 · Video
Why does a compost pile need air and moisture?
The tiny living things that break down scraps need oxygen, like you do. If a pile is packed too tightly or soaked, the air is squeezed out and it starts to smell sour. The pile should feel like a wrung-out sponge: damp but not dripping. Stirring or turning mixes in air. Adding dry browns can soak up extra moisture.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a compost pile need air and moisture?
The Big Idea
A compost pile is full of tiny living helpers! They need air and water. Why?
Tiny Breathers
Step one: Tiny Breathers. The tiny living things that break down scraps need oxygen, just like you do. Without air, they can't do their job well.
Too Tight or Wet
Step two: Too Tight or Wet. If a pile is packed too tightly or soaked, the air gets squeezed out. Then it starts to smell sour, which often means too much wet material.
Just Right
Step three: Just Right. The pile should feel like a wrung-out sponge, damp but not dripping. Stirring or turning mixes in air, and adding dry browns soaks up extra moisture.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! For microbes. Like a sponge. Mixes in air. Soak up wet.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A smelly pile often means too much wet material and not enough air. Damp, not dripping. Turning adds air. Microbes need oxygen.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Put on gloves. Pick up a handful of compost. Squeeze it gently. Is it damp like a wrung-out sponge? Wash your hands afterward.
Outro
The tiny living things in compost need oxygen, so a pile that's packed tight or soaked starts to smell sour. Keep it damp like a wrung-out sponge, turn it to add air, and add dry browns if it's too wet. Science is amazing! Keep wondering and keep exploring!
