Is a weed just a plant in the wrong place?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Is a weed just a plant in the wrong place?

The Big Idea

Gardeners pull weeds all the time! But what makes a plant a weed? Let's find out.

Wrong Place

Step one: Wrong Place. A weed is any plant growing where you don't want it. A dandelion in a lawn may be a weed, but in a wildflower meadow it feeds bees.

Crowding Out

Step two: Crowding Out. Weeds can crowd out garden plants and steal water and light. So gardeners pull them while they are still small.

Helpful Too

Step three: Helpful Too. Some weeds are even edible or helpful. Learning plant names helps you tell weeds from seedlings, but only eat plants a grown-up has identified.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Lawn or meadow? Love flowers. Weeds steal it. Don't pull this!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some plants called weeds were once garden flowers. Dandelions feed bees. Pull them early. Learn plant names.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, find three weeds in your yard. Wear gloves if you touch them. Look up their names. Write one fact about each. Are any helpful to bees?

Outro

A weed is any plant growing where you don't want it, like a dandelion in a lawn that might feed bees in a meadow. Weeds steal water and light, so gardeners pull them early, but some are helpful, and learning names helps you tell them apart. Science is amazing! The world is full of surprises.
