Book 28, Question 95 · Video
Why do some athletes train in the mountains?
Air at high altitude has less oxygen. After a few weeks, the body responds by making more red blood cells, which carry oxygen. Then, when the athletes come down to lower land, their blood can deliver more oxygen to muscles. Some endurance athletes use this to perform better. But it takes time and care, and altitude can cause headaches or breathlessness at first.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some athletes train in the mountains?
The Big Idea
Some athletes train high in the mountains! The air is different up there. Why go so high?
Less Oxygen
Step one: Less Oxygen. Air at high altitude has less oxygen. After a few weeks, the body responds by making more red blood cells, which carry oxygen.
Coming Down
Step two: Coming Down. When athletes come back down to lower land, their blood can deliver more oxygen to muscles. Some endurance athletes use this to perform better.
Take Care
Step three: Take Care. Altitude training takes time and care. At first, altitude can cause headaches or breathlessness.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! High places. Less oxygen. More made. Get more oxygen.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some training camps are in places a mile or more above sea level. Less oxygen up high. Body makes more red cells. Can cause headaches.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Look at a map. Find a high-altitude city that hosts training camps. Look up how high it is. Compare it to where you live. How much higher is it?
Outro
At high altitude, air has less oxygen, so after a few weeks the body makes more red blood cells. Back at lower land, athletes' blood delivers more oxygen to muscles. It takes care, since altitude can cause headaches at first. Science is amazing! Keep asking questions! The more you look around, the more wonders you will find, so keep your eyes open!
