Book 28, Question 57 · Video
Why do shot putters and discus throwers spin?
Spinning gives the athlete a longer path to build up speed before letting go. A discus thrower whirls around and then flings the disc from a high, fast arm. A shot putter often glides or spins across the circle. The longer the push, the faster the object travels at release. Throwing events are done on marked fields under adult supervision for safety.

The Big Idea
Discus throwers spin around before letting go! Shot putters glide or spin too. Why spin?
Longer Path
Step one: Longer Path. Spinning gives the athlete a longer path to build up speed before letting go. A discus thrower whirls around and flings the disc from a high, fast arm.
Shot Put
Step two: Shot Put. A shot putter often glides or spins across the circle. The longer the push, the faster the object travels at release.
Safety
Step three: Safety. Throwing events are done on marked fields under adult supervision. That keeps everyone safe.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Flat disc. Heavy ball. Builds speed. Marked area.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A discus flies like a wing because it is spinning and shaped to lift. Spins build speed. Longer push, faster throw. Adults supervise throws.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Go to an open outdoor space with nobody close. Hold a soft toy on a string. Swing it in a circle. Feel it pull outward. How does speed change the pull?
Outro
