How can you test friction with sports gear?

Video · 1:42 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 28

Make a ramp from a board and raise one end slowly. Place a shoe, glove, or ball on it and measure the angle at which it starts to slide. The steeper the angle before sliding, the more friction. Compare different soles, and test wet and dry. Repeat three times and write down your results. This is how engineers test sports gear.

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can you test friction with sports gear?

The Big Idea

How grippy are your sneakers? You can test it like an engineer! Let's build a friction ramp.

The Ramp

Step one: The Ramp. Make a ramp from a board and raise one end slowly. Place a shoe, glove, or ball on it and measure the angle at which it starts to slide.

Reading Results

Step two: Reading Results. The steeper the angle before sliding, the more friction. Compare different soles, and test wet and dry.

Like Engineers

Step three: Like Engineers. Repeat each test three times and write down your results. This is how engineers test sports gear.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Make a ramp. Measure it. Test grip. Write them down.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The ramp test is a classic physics experiment. Steeper means more grip. Test wet and dry. Repeat three times.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a friction ramp. Test three different shoes. Measure when each starts to slide. Rank them from most grip to least. Which shoe won?

Outro

To test friction, raise one end of a board slowly and measure the angle when a shoe or ball starts to slide. A steeper angle means more grip. Repeat three times and record results, just like engineers. Science is amazing! Keep asking questions! The more you look around, the more wonders you will find, so keep your eyes open!
