Book 28, Question 36 · Video
Why do racers lean into a corner?
To turn, a rider needs a force pointing toward the inside of the curve. On a bike, this comes from tires pushing sideways against the road. Leaning lets the rider balance the sideways push, so they don't tip over. The faster they go or the tighter the turn, the more they need to lean. Skaters and motorcyclists do the same.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do racers lean into a corner?
The Big Idea
Watch bike racers zoom around a corner. They lean way over! Why do they lean?
Turning Force
Step one: Turning Force. To turn, a rider needs a force pointing toward the inside of the curve. On a bike, this comes from tires pushing sideways against the road.
Leaning
Step two: Leaning. Leaning lets the rider balance the sideways push. That way, they don't tip over.
More Lean
Step three: More Lean. The faster they go or the tighter the turn, the more they need to lean. Skaters and motorcyclists do the same.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Needs inside force. Push sideways. Lean balances. More speed, more lean.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Leaning too much can make tires slide. Tires push sideways. Faster means more lean. Always wear a helmet.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Wear your helmet. Ride with a grown-up in an empty lot. Make a gentle turn. Notice how you lean. How does leaning change your turn?
Outro
Racers lean into corners because turning needs a force toward the inside of the curve, which comes from tires pushing sideways. Leaning balances that push so they don't tip over. Faster or tighter turns need more lean. Lean smart and ride safe. Science is amazing! What will you discover next? Every question is a new adventure, so keep wondering and keep exploring with me!
