Book 28, Question 32 · Video
How do ski technicians pick the right wax for different snow?
Wax fills tiny pores in the bottom of a ski and makes it slicker, so the ski glides. Snow changes with temperature. Cold, dry snow is hard and needs hard wax. Warm, wet snow needs a softer wax that sheds water. Technicians check the snow temperature before a race and choose the wax like a chef picking a recipe. The right wax can make a ski noticeably faster.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do ski technicians pick the right wax for different snow?
The Big Idea
Ski racers want to glide super fast! The right wax helps. But which wax?
Slick Skis
Step one: Slick Skis. Wax fills tiny pores in the bottom of a ski and makes it slicker. That helps the ski glide.
Snow Changes
Step two: Snow Changes. Snow changes with temperature: cold, dry snow is hard and needs hard wax. Warm, wet snow needs a softer wax that sheds water.
Like a Chef
Step three: Like a Chef. Technicians check the snow temperature before a race and choose the wax like a chef picking a recipe. The right wax can make a ski noticeably faster.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Fills pores. Needs hard wax. Needs soft wax. Checks temperature.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Ski wax for cross-country skiing helps skis grip as well as glide. Cold snow, hard wax. Wet snow, soft wax. Right wax is faster.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Rub an unlit wax candle on one side of a wood block. Leave the other side bare. Slide the waxed side down a ramp. Then slide the bare side. Which side was faster?
Outro
Ski wax fills tiny pores in a ski's bottom so it glides better. Cold, dry snow needs hard wax, while warm, wet snow needs softer wax. Technicians check the snow temperature and pick the wax like a recipe. Science is amazing! Keep wondering and keep exploring! Share what you learned with someone at home, and see what they think!
