Book 27, Question 124 · Video
What is a transistor, and why does a phone need billions?
A transistor is a tiny switch with no moving parts. Made of silicon, it uses a small electric signal to turn a larger current on or off. The first one was built in 1947 at Bell Labs. Turning many switches on and off lets a computer follow instructions. A phone chip may have billions, each only a few nanometers wide.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is a transistor, and why does a phone need billions?
The Big Idea
A phone chip has billions of tiny switches! They're called transistors. Let's see why we need so many.
Tiny Switch
Step one: Tiny Switch. A transistor is a tiny switch with no moving parts. Made of silicon, it uses a small electric signal to turn a larger current on or off.
History
Step two: History. The first transistor was built in 1947 at Bell Labs. It changed electronics forever.
Billions
Step three: Billions. Turning many switches on and off lets a computer follow instructions. A phone chip may have billions of transistors, each only a few nanometers wide.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! It's a switch. Made of silicon. Signals control it. Phones have billions.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Transistors replaced bulky glass vacuum tubes. Switches with no moving parts. First built in 1947. Only nanometers wide.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, use a toy circuit kit. Connect a small battery and a bulb. Add a switch. Turn it on and off. That's what a transistor does!
Outro
A transistor is a tiny silicon switch with no moving parts that turns electric current on or off. The first was built in 1947. Phones need billions of them, each only nanometers wide, to follow instructions. Science is amazing! The world is full of surprises. Keep asking big questions, and keep exploring with me!
