Book 27, Question 106 · Video
How is sand turned into a computer chip?
Chips begin with quartz sand, which is made of silicon and oxygen. Factories heat it with carbon to separate out silicon, then purify it until it is nearly perfect. A crystal is grown, sliced into thin shiny discs called wafers, and printed with tiny circuits using light and special chemicals. Finally, each wafer is cut into many small chips. It takes hundreds of steps.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How is sand turned into a computer chip?
The Big Idea
Believe it or not, computer chips start as sand! It's an amazing journey. Let's follow it.
Quartz Sand
Step one: Quartz Sand. Chips begin with quartz sand, which is made of silicon and oxygen. Factories heat it with carbon to separate out silicon, then purify it until it is nearly perfect.
Wafers
Step two: Wafers. A crystal is grown and sliced into thin shiny discs called wafers. The wafers are printed with tiny circuits using light and special chemicals.
Chips
Step three: Chips. Finally, each wafer is cut into many small chips. The whole process takes hundreds of steps.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Sand is heated. A crystal grows. It's sliced thin. Chips are cut.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Wafers are polished until they are smoother than a mirror. Heated with carbon. Light prints circuits. Hundreds of steps.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Make a flowchart of the steps from sand to chip. Use five boxes. Start with sand. End with a chip. Add arrows between steps.
Outro
Chips start as quartz sand, heated with carbon to get silicon, then purified. A perfect crystal is grown, sliced into wafers, printed with tiny circuits, and cut into chips. It takes hundreds of steps! Science is amazing! What will you discover next? Every question is a new adventure, so keep wondering and keep exploring with me!
