What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a mineral's shine help you name it?

The Big Idea

Some rocks shine like metal. Some look like glass. Others look dull! That's luster.

Luster

Step one: Luster. Luster describes how a mineral looks when light bounces off its surface. Metallic luster shines like metal, as in pyrite.

Many Kinds

Step two: Many Kinds. Glassy luster looks like glass, as in quartz. Others look pearly, silky, waxy, or dull and earthy.

First Clue

Step three: First Clue. Luster is one of the first clues rock detectives use, because you can notice it without any tools. Try tilting a stone under a lamp to see how the light moves.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Shines like metal. Looks like glass. Like pearls. Like silk thread.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Luster is described with words like vitreous, which means glassy. Pyrite is metallic. Quartz is glassy. Tilt it in the light.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Gather some objects from around your home. Tilt each one in the light. Sort them into shiny, glassy, and dull groups. Which group is biggest? Try it with rocks too!
