Book 27, Question 63 · Video
What is table salt made of, and why does it look like tiny cubes?
Table salt is made of sodium and chloride, joined as sodium chloride. In a crystal, sodium and chloride alternate in a cube-shaped lattice, like a three-dimensional checkerboard. As the crystals grow, their outer faces form flat squares, so each grain is a tiny cube. This is why salt crumbles into smaller cubes. Salt is safe in food.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is table salt made of, and why does it look like tiny cubes?
The Big Idea
Look closely at table salt. Each grain is a tiny cube! Why is that?
Sodium Chloride
Step one: Sodium Chloride. Table salt is made of sodium and chloride, joined as sodium chloride. Salt is safe to eat in food.
Checkerboard
Step two: Checkerboard. In a crystal, sodium and chloride alternate in a cube-shaped lattice. It's like a three-dimensional checkerboard.
Tiny Cubes
Step three: Tiny Cubes. As the crystals grow, their outer faces form flat squares, so each grain is a tiny cube. That's why salt crumbles into smaller cubes.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Sodium is one part. Chloride is the other. They alternate. Cubes form.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Chlorine gas is poisonous, but when it joins sodium in salt, it becomes something different, which we eat every day. A 3D checker board. Grains are cubes. Salt is safe in food.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Cut squares from two colors of paper. Make a checkerboard layer. Make another layer, switching colors. Stack them up. You've made a salt model!
Outro
Table salt is sodium chloride. Sodium and chloride alternate in a cube-shaped lattice like a 3D checkerboard, so each grain grows into a tiny cube with flat square faces. Science is amazing!
