Book 27, Question 33 · Video
Why do the crystals in a geode point toward the middle?
Crystals grow from wall surfaces outward into any open space. In a geode, the wall is the starting place, so each crystal sprouts from the wall and points into the empty middle, where it has the most room. Crystals growing next to each other squeeze and compete, which is why some are thin at the base and wider at the tip. It looks like a tiny crystal cave.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do the crystals in a geode point toward the middle?
The Big Idea
Peek inside a geode. All the crystals point toward the middle! Why is that?
From the Walls
Step one: From the Walls. Crystals grow from wall surfaces outward into any open space. In a geode, the wall is the starting place.
Most Room
Step two: Most Room. Each crystal sprouts from the wall and points into the empty middle, where it has the most room. It looks like a tiny crystal cave.
Squeezing
Step three: Squeezing. Crystals growing next to each other squeeze and compete. That's why some are thin at the base and wider at the tip.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Walls start growth. Crystals sprout. They point inward. Neighbors squeeze.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Amethyst geodes can be purple because of tiny amounts of iron. Most room in the middle. Crystals compete for space. A tiny crystal cave.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw a big circle. Add pointy triangles growing from the edges. Point them toward the center. Color them purple like amethyst. You've drawn a geode!
Outro
Crystals in a geode point toward the middle because they grow outward from the walls into the open space, where there's the most room. Neighbors squeeze and compete, making some wider at the tip.
