Book 27, Question 30 · Video
How do crystals appear when salty water dries up?
When water evaporates, it leaves behind whatever was dissolved in it. As the water level shrinks, the salts become more crowded until they cannot stay dissolved, and crystals start to form, often along the edges where evaporation is fastest. This is how sea salt is collected in shallow pools, and how white rings appear on a boot after it dries.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do crystals appear when salty water dries up?
The Big Idea
Let salty water dry up, and something appears! White crystals! Let's find out how.
Evaporation
Step one: Evaporation. When water evaporates, it leaves behind whatever was dissolved in it. The salt can't float away.
Crowded Salt
Step two: Crowded Salt. As the water level shrinks, the salts become more crowded until they can't stay dissolved. Crystals start to form, often along the edges where evaporation is fastest.
Everyday Salt
Step three: Everyday Salt. That's how sea salt is collected in shallow pools. It's also how white rings appear on a boot after it dries.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Sun warms water. Water evaporates. Salt stays behind. Boots get rings.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Sea salt farms use sunshine to evaporate seawater. Crystals start at edges. White rings on boots. Water leaves, salt stays.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Dissolve salt in warm water with a grown-up. Dip a paintbrush in it. Paint a picture on dark paper. Let it dry. Watch your white crystal picture appear!
Outro
When salty water dries up, the water evaporates and leaves the salt behind. As it gets crowded, crystals form, often at the edges, which is how sea salt is collected and how boots get white rings.
