What makes some crystals see-through and others milky?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What makes some crystals see-through and others milky?

The Big Idea

Some crystals are clear as glass. Others look cloudy and milky. What makes the difference?

Clear Crystals

Step one: Clear Crystals. A perfectly clear crystal lets light pass straight through. Nothing gets in the light's way.

Cloudy Crystals

Step two: Cloudy Crystals. Cloudy crystals often have tiny cracks, bubbles, or other minerals trapped inside that scatter the light. Quartz can be clear like glass, or milky white if full of tiny bubbles.

Slow and Calm

Step three: Slow and Calm. Slow, calm growth tends to make clearer crystals. There's time for atoms to settle neatly.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Clear lets light in. Milky scatters it. Bubbles cloud it. Cracks do too.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Rock crystal is a name for very clear quartz. Slow growth is clearer. Bubbles make cloudy. Light passes through.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at one clear grain of coarse rock salt. Look at a spoonful of fine salt. Use a magnifier. Which looks clearer? Why might many tiny crystals look white?

Outro

Clear crystals let light pass straight through, while milky ones have tiny cracks, bubbles, or minerals inside that scatter light. Slow, calm growth tends to make clearer crystals. Look closely at the next crystal you see. Science is amazing! Keep wondering and keep exploring! Share what you learned with someone at home, and see what they think!
