Book 27, Question 13 · Video
Is ice a crystal?
Yes. When water freezes, its molecules lock into a six-sided pattern with open spaces between them. That pattern is a crystal lattice, and it is why ice crystals often have six sides. The open spaces also make ice less dense than liquid water, so it floats. Frost on a window, ice cubes, and glaciers are all made of ice crystals.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Is ice a crystal?
The Big Idea
Ice cubes, frost, and glaciers. Are they crystals? Yes, they are!
Freezing
Step one: Freezing. When water freezes, its molecules lock into a six-sided pattern with open spaces between them. That pattern is a crystal lattice, which is why ice crystals often have six sides.
Floating
Step two: Floating. The open spaces make ice less dense than liquid water. So ice floats.
All Ice
Step three: All Ice. Frost on a window, ice cubes, and glaciers are all made of ice crystals. Ice is one of the most common crystals on Earth.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Snowflakes have six sides. Cubes are crystals. Glaciers are huge. Frost is feathery.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Scientists have made many forms of ice, but ordinary ice is the kind you see. Six sides often. Ice floats on water. Ice is a crystal.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Ask a grown-up to open the freezer. Look at frost with a magnifier. What shapes do you notice? Draw what you see. Close the freezer quickly!
Outro
Ice is a crystal because water molecules lock into a six-sided pattern with open spaces. Those spaces make ice float, and frost, cubes, and glaciers are all ice crystals. Next time you see frost, look closely. Science is amazing! Remember, every big discovery starts with a small question. Keep looking, keep learning, and keep asking why!
